Subcutaneous angiogenesis in patients undergoing plastic surgery procedures after weight-reducing gastroplasty: a reason for increased bleeding during intra- and postoperative periods?
Abstract Plastic surgery procedures performed in patients who previously underwent weight-reducing gastroplasty present a high risk
for medical complications, one of the most severe being bleeding during the perioperative period. Although the cause of this
bleeding is currently unknown, it is postulated that these patients may present an increase in microvascular density and/or
in the diameter of subcutaneous vessels. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the number and the caliber of subcutaneous
vessels in two groups of patients undergoing abdominoplasty, one of them with a history of previous weight-reducing gastroplasty
(group I) and the other without this feature (group II). Each group was composed of ten female subjects. During the surgeries,
samples of s…

Special Reconstruction Techniques for Special Circumstances
Facial plast Surg 2009; 25: 204-211DOI: 10.1055/s-0029-1239450ABSTRACTAuricular reconstruction is a challenging, mostly multistaged procedure that requires many different techniques. Whereas standard techniques have been developed for the standard severe, third-degree dysplasia, we are often confronted with severely scarred patients due to excess trauma or prior operations. These special situations need a variety of special techniques; some of those are described here to be considered as alternative options.[...]© Thieme Medical PublishersGet connected:Table of contents | Abstract | Full text (Source: Facial Plastic Surgery)

The Learning Curve in Microtia Surgery
Facial plast Surg 2009; 25: 164-168DOI: 10.1055/s-0029-1239445ABSTRACTReconstruction of the auricle is known to be complex. Our objective was to evaluate the improvement of the outcome of the lobulus-type microtia reconstruction. Patient satisfaction was also evaluated. There are no previous reports of the learning process in this field. Postoperative photographs of 51 microtia reconstructions were assessed and rated by a panel made up of six surgeons. The ratings were gathered to generate learning curves. Twenty-two patients assessed the outlook of their reconstructed ears, and the results were analyzed as a self-assessment group. The reliability of the rating by a panel was tested by intraclass correlations. There is a highly significant increasing trend in learning ( = 0.000…
