Gillies 2.0—senses and Sherlock Holmes

The latest iteration in the Sherlock Holmes movies arrived in America on Christmas Day. Digital effects allowed its director, Guy Ritchie, to have slow motion sequences that showed how Holmes used his senses to deduce facts about other characters. Holmes was a fictional detective, but we plastic surgeons are fortunate to have been taught Gillies’ principle ‘Observation is the basis of surgical diagnosis.’ This was Gillies’ first principle and the basis of his others. He believed that without a proper diagnosis surgical disaster loomed and went so far as to say, ‘Mistakes in diagnosis due to inadequate examination are perhaps the commonest cause of indifferent treatment’. Remembering Robert Goldwyn

Last February Andrew Burd reviewed Bob Goldwyn’s book “Retired not Dead”. Last week Bob Goldwyn died. Shortly after returning from the 2009 BAPRAS winter meeting I spoke to Bob and he told me that he had been confined to bed and could no longer walk. Although he never complained, I knew that he was getting sicker from the complications of chemotherapy that he had been receiving for his metastatic prostate carcinoma. I thought that something was amiss when Bob did not respond to my last email entitled “Juicy Gossip” and my fears were confirmed when I found his death notice posted on the internet. It took many years and a huge amount of correspondence and personal encounters to finally reach this decision. (Source: Journal of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery)

Hopkins reunion

Every two years the Johns Hopkins Medical and Surgical Association holds a reunion in Baltimore. This year was different because it was not only a reunion but also a celebration of Paul Manson’s tenure as chief of plastic surgery and his impending retirement after a third of a century at Hopkins, a period that began in 1976, his first year of residency. Awards Season Yin and Yang

We Americans love awards. We have them in entertainment including the Academy Awards, Golden Globe Awards, Emmy Awards, Tony Awards, MTV Awards, Grammy Awards, Country Music Awards, in more cerebral spheres of the arts we have the Pulitzer Prizes that include journalism, fiction, poetry and plays and in medicine we have the Lasker Prizes for research. The only things that Americans love more than the awards are awards shows. Indeed, we have a new type of television shows called ‘reality TV’ in which people compete to win cash or prizes.
